Skiing

Skiers are usually fashionable types, yearning for new ventures and experiences to satisfy their adventurous outlook on life, so few are happy with returning to same ski resort every year. They are always on the lookout for new skiing areas, developing regions, even new countries to explore and try out their skills. Over recent years the typical ski resorts in France, Italy, Germany and Austria have come up against a stock of new opposition when it comes to tempting skiers to their slopes. These suggestions are just a few of the new possibilities that are now open to skiers prepared to try out somewhere new.

Indoor ski centres are a completely new alternative and since their inception just a handful of years ago, have been proving very popular, particularly in countries where outdoor skiing or snowboarding is not practical. The history of indoor real snow slopes does go back many years in the far east countries such as China and Japan. They seem to have had their time though as far as large complexes are concerned, perhaps because the size of the potential customer market was never large enough to support the larger complexes that were built. In Japan the SSAWS (Spring Summer Autumn Winter Snow) which was also known as the LaLaport SkiDome, which was a huge 100m high structure enclosing a slope of 500m yet closed down in 2002 after operating for almost ten years. The centre was only able to attract half the number of visitors it needed to operate profitably.

In China the Yinqixing Indoor Skiing centre is currently one of the biggest with over 100,000 square metres of snow area and a main slope almost 400m long.

The most extreme example of an indoor skiing centre is Ski Dubai centre which encloses over 22,000 square metres of snow and offers a long slope of 400m. The hall enclosing the slope is even spacious enough for a full sized chair lift. Another huge indoor snow centre called the Dubai Snowdome was planned but has now been put on hold.

In the UK there are now quite a few indoor ski and snowboard centres that offer real snow ski slopes. They are proving popular all year round and organise all types of training events and sessions for activities such as cross-country skiing. The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead is the latest to be constructed and provides convenient facilities for London and the South East of England.

Back to the outdoors and another unusual location for skiing is the country of Iran. You may imagine places like Iran to be mainly hot and sandy, but in fact skiing in Iran dates back to the 1930’s. The most popular ski resort is Shemshak which sits at an altitude between 2500 and 3000m. That’s higher than busy resorts in Europe such as Meribel, Courmayeur and Kitzbuhel. The quality of the slopes is such that professional ski races can be held there. Another Iranian resort is Dizin, where the slopes peak out at a height of 3600m. The standard of the resort equipment is however some years behind that of the European resorts and some safety rules are either absent or seem to be ignored. Not a place for taking the children skiing perhaps.

As many mainstream European resorts are starting to look like pricey options for UK skiers, countries like Bulgaria are grasping the opportunity to entice new skiers to their resorts with cheaper alternatives. The main resort in Bulgaria is Bansko, but Borovets, Pamporovo and Vitosha are also attractive. Bankso is the newest of the three resorts and sits in a scenic area in the foothills of Mount Pirin. The hotels are modern and attractive and the area boasts 65 kilometres of ski runs and a lift system that can cope with 10,000 people per day. Advanced slopes are limited but the resort makes perfect sense for beginners or young families. Some of the slopes are floodlit thereby extending the skiing days.

Finally how would you like to ski in Kosovo? The ski resort of Brezovica promises wonderful scenery, off piste skiing or snowboarding but a few question marks about access and stability, considering the country only recently gained its independence from Serbia last year (something which Serbia quickly sought to revoke). However most of the UN and EU countries do recognise the independence. Last year a BBC report suggested that the resort was in dire trouble having been run mainly by Serbs for Serbs, who now found themselves in an isolated area. The {result is a far cry from the busy seasons experienced during the days of the former Yugoslavia. There were suggestions last year that the ski resort would be taken into private ownership in 2009. The resort is quite small, running just 10 lifts and offering only 16km of slopes, but they are however recognized by the FIS for various events, which does indicate that they are high quality.

i have sooo much time on my hands.. what sort of interesting, productive things can i do or groups can i join??

I have a lot of time on my hands which is going to waste.

at the moment I am at uni, so I have classes, coursework and extra curricular, I am also looking for work but even with all those things I still have a lot of time on my hands.

I want to be part of a group and use my time productively and gain or utilize any or all of my learnt skills.

I am a 23yr old female living in London and I don’t know what to do… can anyone give me any ideas of groups i could join or things i can do, which will enable me meet knew people..??

I really want to be apart of something interesting and fun which could benefit me and possibly other people. So apart from the obvious charity work, what else can I do?
Are there any FUN groups I can join, skating, indoor snowboarding, discussion groups… anything?

And how do I find them?

How about hooking up your Unis Christian Union? OK so ‘religion’ may not be what your into, and you might think its weired to suggest but they are graet people to get to know, they don’t do drugs and dispite their reps they are not all hymn singing bores. They do do some great things like going to camps and cocerts have partys and everything you may think of as fun, but with the foccus beng basically bible bassed. Try it for a week or two you never know you may like what you see. Or perhaps, although you say not to mention charity working, how about finding out about working a few hours a week at your neares suip kitchen or homeless shelter as meeting these sort of people can Change Your out look on life and give you an education no Universerty could ever do. This goes for christians too, as they both could change you life in many ways. Or if You Are doing real hard accademic courses that involve reading why not start a hobby that is craft related like learning to do patch work quilts.OK so this sounds old fassioned but if you learn this art form and begin by using bits of cloth fron your old clothes, or a friends clothes, you will not only end up with something useful to use, eventually, but when you leave your studies behind it could serve as a great way to remember your friends and the great times you have had there. You could also get your friends to join in, maybe, and create a friendship quilt (one that is made by many people) then auction it off for charity like The Terence Higgins Foundation or something. Quilting may seem an archaic pass time but it a great skill to have and one that you can spend as little or as much time on as you like and when you put it down you can pick up were you left off when you want to do so.
Or if you are realy bored then why not see if you can make a friend or two with some Londoners, rather that Uni people and let them show you around their city. may be surprised what they show you. Like somewer you are ony a mile away from that you never knew about, yet you find you realy like. Good Luck in finding something. PS doing any of the things I suggested can learn you some valuable lifeskills that you may not already have or improve the ones you do have and think if you get involved with the C.U. your Mom and Dad wont complain your mixing with a ‘wrong’ crowd, even if they still think its weired. Any way good luck finding something. LuiseJ
