Olympic Snowboarding Vancouver

olympic snowboarding vancouver
What shouldn’t i miss in vancouver during the olympics?

im going up for the 27th to see snowboarding but ive never been to vancouver and i’d like a locals opinion on the top 10 things to do (especially best unique food places). im a college student from out of the country, and im on a small budget. id like to soak in as much as possible. tell me your favorites. thanks in advance!

Small budget could be a problem in Vancouver (as with most places) as the funnest things to do are usually the more expensive ones. Normally I would say “make sure to check out the mountains”, but that could be hard with all the other folks here for the Olympics.

If You Are an outdoors-y type, I recommend trying to get out to North Van. Go down to Waterfront Station and take a Seabus across the Strait of Georgia to the other side (rather than driving over the Lions’ Gate Bridge). This will get you to a bus loop where you can catch a ride up to Lynn Valley. It’s a great spot for hiking and even has a pretty awesome suspension bridge and an ecological center. Best of all – it’s free!

Along similar lines, you can always go for a walk around Stanley Park. It’s one of the largest urban parks in North America and if you head around the Sea Wall you can see some pretty spectacular sights like Siwash Rock, “The Little Mermaid”, Lions Gate Bridge, the Lighthouse, Lumbermans arch, some cool little cliffs, beaches, etc. Alternatively, go for a stroll through the woods and enjoy a little dab of nature in the city.

While in Stanley Park why not check out the Vancouver Aquarium? It might not be cheap, but it’s well-worth having a look at. There are some pretty cool animals there and a lot of information about local sea life. There’s also the Farmyard (it’s for kids, but it’s still nice), trolley bus tours, the Rose Gardens, Lost Lagoon, and the spectacular Prospect Point.

If you’re looking for a more indoors experience, give Metrotown a look. It’ll be packed due to the Olympics probably, but at least its out in Burnaby (and not in Downtown Vancouver). It may take a while to get to, but there is lots of public transportation going out there (tons of buses + sky train). It’s got pretty much everything you could hope for in a mall too.

If you’re more into Art / Science, be sure to head down to the Vancouver Art Gallery for the Leonardo DiVinci exhibit or Science World (*cough Telus World of Science cough*) and browse around the numerous exhibits. Watch an OmniMax film. They’re awesome.

Downtown does have some pretty wicked stuff going on right now too. Lots of free events in and around the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District; which includes Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and – I think – New Westminster). Enjoy a ride on the Skytrain (not the Canada Line, which is mostly underground) and watch the sights go flying by. There are also lots of clubs, restaurants, stores, coffee shops, libraries, etc in and around Vancouver to suit your desires.

Lastly, there’s lots of stuff going right now to do with Chinese/Lunar New Year (especially in Chinatown). There’s lots of music, dancing, spectacles, and cultural happenings. Why not head down to Gastown (which merges with Chinatown) and check out the Sun Yat Sen Gardens? They’re beautiful and serene. It might be a nice little spot to relax and get away from the crowds.

That’s all I can really think of that is fairly inexpensive and also fun, but there’s lots of other things. Feel free to ask the locals around, as there’s also neat little things that only people from the given area will Know About, and (most) of us should be pretty polite. You’ll know the Canadians from the rest of the crowd. Just look for the only people wearing t-shirts and shorts. ;)
