Armchair Olympian
I am not an avid sports fan, but I confess that I loved watching the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. It was nice to see something positive and motivation to change and enjoy some really amazing acts and generous. I found a great variety of sports was fascinating, demonstrating that much can be done in the cold climates of winter!
Consider the spectrum Sports. There are many varieties of skiing. The downhill ski event at speeds reaching 140 km / h, mph (87) gives speeding tickets to go that fast in a car! Imagine that it takes to be a ski jumper in an attempt to imitate the flight and defy gravity longer, once it is in the air. Image of freestyle skiers that twist and turn in the air so fast that I do not know how the commentators can describe their incredible aerial feats. Skiers have a huge resistance, and some guns firing off in performance of their lungs, heart pounding and gasping.
We have seen a more recent development that has made its Olympic debut at the Nagano Olympics in 1998, snowboarding. I think surfers are more fun to build your vocabulary in speaking of a McTwist, Fakie, Duckfoot an ollie or a Nollie! Not used be Narly … or suffers to speak and I'm just so far?
There are speed skaters in their flashy costumes Skin Tight flying around an oval ice surface in up to 60 km / h (37 mph) battling against the G forces when cornering. The figure skaters entertained us with their dance routines and leaps of inspiration. They also showed huge grain when a Chinese skater Zhang Dan pairs figure was a dramatic drop not seen anyone tremble. To our disbelief, this rose to 20, finished the routine and won the silver medal. Awesome.
We can not forget the curlers. A sport many find strange, but they appreciate the accuracy of your time curling rock 44 meters (49 yards) from the surface of the ice and try to make a bulls eye with two sweepers help accelerate the control and direction of a heavy stone, while your opponent tries to block you, or throw yourself in each location. Much shouting and physical support to the sport! Imagine four Newfoundland to win the gold medal – about a game when you arrive at the house!
There is the luge where, depending on circumstances, one or two people are on their backs in a race sled establishing a tight twisty … feet first. You could think it's pretty scary until you see the skeleton of the case, perhaps aptly named. These athletes are declining steep ice on a sled with no brakes, head first. Hmmm … Where to find people to do?
Then it's ice hockey. The men and women adults strap on the boots with blades on the bottom, use curved sticks to shoot a hard rubber disk on the network of adversaries. This happens as you skate up 50 km / h (30 mph) and throw the discus in more than 150 km / h (95 mph), while maneuvering on the ice. A shame both the United States NHL Laden and Canadian teams not even reached the semi-finals. Perhaps too much talent not enough "team.
During the period 17 days, 2500 athletes from 85 nations competed for 84 medals in seven sports. We share the pride of those on the podium, and he smiled or wept as their national anthem played before the world. Two isolated incidents in the XXth Olympic Games stand out in my mind and will for many years.
Welcome Joey Cheek, gold medalist, the U.S. Speed Skating for the gift of your $ 25,000 bonus to Right to Play, an organization of former Olympic Paralympic and professional athletes worldwide who support using sport for development, health and peace. Good for you Joey, You Are an inspiration for many.
Perhaps the decisive moment of the Games was when Sara Renner, a Canadian broke his stick Ski Cross Country team in the race sprint. A Norwegian coach gave him a stick to finish the race. She and teammate Beckie Scott won the silver medal. For I, this altruistic act defines sportsmanship and the evidence of the harsh reality of life in the Olympic Spirit. Visit Vancouver in 2010.
