Avoid want? Skiing at Bear Valley

You've heard of ski slopes at Lake Tahoe or Mammoth, but one of the best ski centers or snowboarding experience awaits you ever been to Bear Valley, where the crowds are few, but emotions are many.

Even if is not comparable to Squaw Valley or Heavenly or other major ski resorts in California, the Bear Valley ski area is always an ideal candidate for a weekend or extended vacation. As we discovered in early February, Bear Valley offers an amazing total experience of vacation Skiing – No frills, certainly, but rewarding merit and worth the journey deep into the Sierra Nevada.

If the designer clothing stores, condos Zillion Dollar, and Hollywood-style shiny part of their criteria for a ski holiday, skiing in this area may not be the best option. If everything is open long lines, no elevator and lots of snow are arranged important to you, then by all means try to Bear Valley.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest could not compare Bear Valley to one of our favorite ski areas in Washington State – a place called Mission Ridge, in a city called Wenatchee. The population in this part of the state is small compared to major ski areas near Seattle, so that Mission Ridge is able to offer large ski slopes open seven days a week.

Similarly, Bear Valley is less accessible than many major ski areas in the region of Lake Tahoe. Bay Area and Sacramento residents can drive Interstate 80 to the Tahoe area and find a selection of ski resorts within walking distance of the interstate. To arrive at this ski, you have to drive two-lane roads through the hills and mountains about 100 miles.

But when you get there, Most skiers and snowboarders are worth. Our ski mid-week has been one of the best we've seen – much larger and open the way to a perfect intermediaries and in the presence of a number of lifts in which he seemed never lines. Skiing in the race, doing things in the chair and do it all over again and again until a few hours today, we were more exhausted. Probably skied in four hours, which we takes a whole day to do in a complex with moderate elevation lines.

No gondolas or high-speed chairlifts quadruple in Bear Valley, although there are a total of 10 lifts, mostly doubles and triples. Approximately 1280 hectares are available for skiing and snowboarding approximately 100 hectares located in an area where snow can do – although some 7750 meters, is Mother Nature in May to provide all the snow you need.

We mentioned the intermediate skiing, as is our favorite – but do not worry This area has many trails expert black diamond ski or for those seeking more of a challenge. The day lodge is located mid-mountain lifts, both go to the mountain at 8495 meters, and on arriving at the shelter bottom of the mountain. Most racing experts are on the bottom of the mountain.

Area Day Lodge has been open and easy to navigate. Instead masses of people queuing for food and find a place to sit, we had our law and prepared the sandwiches and Philly cheese in minutes. And no shortage of options menu – lots of different types of food from sandwiches to Asian cuisine, soups and salads with meals key.

But the experience of Bear Valley is much more than a round – or at least should be given time to reach the ski resort. For our trip booked accommodation at the Inn of the Bear Valley, one of only a few hotel-type facilities near the mountain. Located about three miles from the mountain, Bear Valley Lodge seems to be the center of activity in the region and has proved a good choice of accommodation. While showing a portion of his age – was built in the 60s – The Lodge proved to be a comfortable, practical base. A bus service takes you to ski the mountain, and you can even ski all the way back to the hostel.

When we say comfortable, we are not comparing the hostel to find condominiums high in most stations. The Bear Valley Lodge rooms are more like a motel unit with two beds double, a pool and a TV / entertainment area that includes HBO. However, the small details – such as bay windows overlooking the landscape or snowy pine furniture – has helped to make this feel much more comfortable than a motel room.

The four floors of rooms in the Valley Hostel Bear in the lounge overlooking the cathedral, a large open space in the center of the lens that offers guests a place to sit and read and enjoy the fire in the massive stone fireplace. The photos are mounted along the walls depicting the history of the lodge and ski area at Bear Valley. Celebrities such as Spider Savich, Claudine Longet, Merv Griffin and many others are skiing or enjoying Bear Valley.

Nearby village shops, including a former fashion shop – with a caterer to get sandwiches and soups fast – and a ski shop surprisingly complete with all the latest ski equipment, clothing and accessories. But keep in mind that this not the kind of destination where you can spend hours of household if You Are on the tracks that your stay here will probably be passed by the fireplace reading a good book.

During our brief stay we dined the inn Grizzly Lounge – mainly because the other Lodge restaurant, the Creekside Dining Room, was closed Monday and Tuesday. Food was good and a living room a few menu items including the Creekside. We do know that Creekside has recently used a good education and achieve the leader who has been both creative and popular with customers – so we were disappointed that they have the opportunity to test the Creekside kitchen.

We also enjoyed a meal at the end at base camp, a refuge that is within walking distance of the Lodge at Bear Valley, and the only other Hotel style accommodation is located near the ski area. We enjoyed our meals at base camp, where we made the acquaintance of English a waitress came to Bear Valley, simply because the skiing is Very Good. The Basecamp offers rooms certainly the lowest cost in the area of "room bathroom in the hallway. "

There are also condominiums and rentals available at the Bear Valley area, as well as the Tamarack Lodge more west on Highway 4 cab. Prices in general will be less at base camp, moderate in the Bear Valley Lodge and larch, and more even when you rent a holiday home of all.

While in the region, there are several small towns and attractions worth stopping if you have weather. To get to Bear Valley in winter, you travel through the historic town of Angel's Camp, then a city of gold rush similar but more Small called Murphys.

However, our suggestion would be to allocate sufficient time to ski. You want to ski or board of Bear Valley as long the weather – and legs – will follow.
